About TIOCS

What We Are

The Institute of Conceptual Studies is an independent research institute working on foundational questions about reality, consciousness, and knowledge.

We are not a university department, not a think tank, and not a consultancy. We are a non-profit intellectual project — built to spread knowledge without the distortions of commercial or institutional pressure. The mission is direct: make rigorous thinking about hard questions accessible to anyone willing to engage with it.

Why Now

There is a gap in the intellectual landscape that existing institutions are poorly positioned to fill.

Academic philosophy has become increasingly fragmented into technical sub-fields that rarely speak to each other. Physics produces extraordinary formal results but struggles to integrate them with questions of consciousness and meaning. Spiritual and philosophical traditions carry deep insights but often lack the formal rigor to connect with scientific frameworks.

The gap is the synthesis — the structural patterns these traditions share, and what becomes possible when they can speak to each other.

That is what TIOCS is building.

Origin

TIOCS grew out of a sustained inquiry that began in early 2023. What started as personal philosophical investigation — pursued through extended dialogue with early AI systems as collaborative thinking partners — became progressively more rigorous over the years that followed.

The institute is co-founded by Daniel Grey and Patrick Ames. The work started as theirs, but it is intended for anyone. Please join us in this adventure!
